Being able to custom make your own tools encompasses the very essence of being a blacksmith. The purpose of this class is to present the fundamentals of tool design, function, heat, force, tooling and iron. Using this knowledge, each student will design and forge their own shepherd's knife and basic tools. This introductory class provides a solid smithing foundation and is required for follow on group and private classes.

Securely holding and controlling a hot work piece is the primary purpose of blacksmith tongs. This class will show students how to improve the tong jaws, joint and reins design, forging, assembly and fit. Flat jaw, box, flat bar, pick-up and other tong types will be addressed. Discussions include tong handling, size, material, forging style, and history. Students will take away their own custom designed and forged tongs incorporating the information learned.

PREREQUISITE: Introduction to Blacksmithing class or instructor's approval.

Being able to make strong durable welds, in your own small shop, is an essential capability for a blacksmith. Unfortunately, welding machine operation, selecting the appropriate rod size, alloy type, power setting and weld technique can be confusing and intimidating. For many, taking a three-month welding course at the local city college is just not a practical option. To address this challenge, the Basic Shop Welding Class teaches you how to make good strong basic welds when fabricating your own shop equipment, tools and equipment stands in a simple and straightforward manner. You will learn how to define and select your basic welding equipment. You will make a simple project using Stick Arc welding, Mig Arc welding and Oxy Propane Cutting systems. You will learn the basics of weld rod size, type and selection. You will also learn to use grinders and the processes for properly prepping and finishing your welds.
